Supports and services

Grants and funding

Research Services helps with the preparation of individual and institutional submissions for funding to provincial and federal departments or agencies. We also assist students with the preparation of applications for graduate scholarship funding opportunities.

Internal funding opportunities

Mount Allison offers several internal funding opportunities for full- and part-time faculty members and librarians to support the development of their research and creative activities.

Some of these funds are intended to allow researchers to participate in research activities and conferences in their field, while other may serve to allow researchers to carry out essential developmental work that will be used in preparing applications for funding at the regional or national level, and/or to carry out research and creative activities that have a limited scope or scale.

Please contact us and visit the Faculty & Staff Gateway — Internal funding opportunities.

External funding opportunities

The Office of Research Services has extensive experience working with our regional and national funding partners like CFI, CIHR, MITACS, ResearchNB, NBETF, NBWTF, NSERC, and SSHRC.

Please speak with one of our staff and visit the Faculty & Staff Gateway — External funding opportunities should you be interested in securing external funding for your research and creative activities.

Research committees

Research Services supports the work of Mount Allison's research committees. For information and resources, visit the Faculty & Staff Gateway — Research and creative activity (requires @mta.ca email).

Animal Care Committee (ACC)

The Mount Allison animal care committee (ACC) is a presidential committee that oversees the use of animals in teaching and research in accordance with the guidelines provided by the Canadian Council for Animal Care.

Any faculty or student researcher interested in conducting research with animals must receive approval by the ACC prior to the commencement of any research.

For more details and resources: Animal Care Committee (F&S Gateway)

Biosafety Committee

The biosafety committee oversees and manages the use and disposal of biohazardous materials and biosafety, governed by Policy 2020 — Biosafety and Biohazards.

Researchers and instructors wishing to use biohazardous materials must first obtain a Biohazard Certificate from the university's Biosafety Committee.

For more details and resources: Biosafety (F&S Gateway)

Research Ethics Board (REB)

Mount Allison’s Research Ethics Board (REB) oversees all research involving human participants and is strictly guided by the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans  (TCPS).

The REB will approve, reject, propose modifications to, or terminate any proposed or ongoing research involving human subjects which is conducted within or by members of Mount Allison University using the considerations set forth in the TCPS as the minimum standard.

Any faculty or student researcher interested in conducting research with human subjects must familiarize themselves with the information contained within this section and receive approval by the REB prior to the commencement of any research.

Diversity and inclusion

The best and most innovative research and creative pursuits occur when informed by a diversity of perspectives and in an inclusive and supportive environment.

That’s why research services is committed to identifying and eliminating systemic institutional barriers that would otherwise preclude the full participation of our community in realizing their highest potential.

Please reach out to our staff to learn how we can best support you and your team, and how you can incorporate effective strategies within your sphere of influence to advance EDI in research.

Information sessions and training

Research Services periodically hosts information and training opportunities for faculty and staff and for students in a variety of topics like grant writing, internal and external funding opportunities, ROMEO, EDI in research, research ethics, research security, and more.

Strategic research planning and research policies

The Senate Research and Creative Activities Committee developed the University's Strategic Research and Creative Activities Plan (pdf), which was approved by Senate on Nov. 15, 2016 and most recently updated in September 2021.

About the strategic research plan

The Strategic Research Plan identifies:

  • strategic objectives and action items to increase the capacity for research and creative activity success at Mount Allison University
  • strategic areas of research intensity and emphasis which guide future nominations and appointments in the Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program and which justify future investments through the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI)

The plan also outlines areas of research intensity and emphasis — thematic areas where Mount Allison has a critical mass of researchers and impact or where there are latent and emerging opportunities.

Research and Creative Activities Committee

The Research and Creative Activity Committee is a Senate committee that helps to set the strategic vision of research and creative activity at Mount Allison in its role as an advisor to the Provost and Vice-President, Academic and Research, through its policy and procedural recommendations, and through its adjudication of some internal grants and awards.
