This year’s budget responds to substantive, material financial pressures, in the face of which the University has maintained a disciplined approach to financial management, including a reduction in its projected deficit and continued alignment of expenditures with institutional priorities.
The budget emphasizes prudent financial management and responsible stewardship, ensuring the University remains strong and independent while continuing to deliver exceptional and transformative student experiences.
Guided by Mount Allison’s Strategic Plan — Broad Minds. Bold Futures. Lifelong Connections. — the budget aligns institutional resources with key priorities supporting both immediate needs and long-term success.
Mount Allison remains firmly committed to its identity as Canada’s leading undergraduate liberal arts and sciences institution, defined by academic excellence, close student–faculty engagement, and a supportive, interconnected community. Within this context, the University remains grounded in its mission of learning, exploration, and preparing students to prosper in a complex and evolving world.
Key Student-Facing Investments
The University continues to experience strong enrolment trends, with growth anticipated once again for the 2026-27 academic year.
As part of the implementation of the University’s Strategic Plan, Mount Allison is undertaking reviews of operations, structures, and programming focused on resource alignment and efficiencies. Given the current funding environment, this work continues with an increased focus on long-term financial sustainability and alignment.
To maintain the quality of academic excellence and student experience, student tuition will increase. For New Brunswick residents, this will equate to a 3.5% increase, while Canadian residents and international students will see an increase of 5%. These decisions follow careful internal review and reflect financial sustainability needs, maintaining the student experience Mount Allison is known for amidst an evolving and uncertain funding and economic environment.
Importantly, this adjustment supports continued and increased investment in the people, services, and supports that directly benefit students, including:
- A new Director of Student Equity and Community Development to strengthen student support and belonging
- Additional resources in Extended Learning, Computing Services, and audio-visual support to enhance teaching, learning, and classroom technology
- 7.3% increase to financial aid, bringing total financial aid from $5.5 million to $5.9 million
“This budget reflects our continued commitment to supporting students while managing significant external pressures,” says President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Ian Sutherland. “We are focused on making strategic, responsible decisions that strengthen the University today and position us for long-term success.”
Mount Allison continues to be recognized as Canada’s premiere undergraduate university known for academic excellence, personalized learning journeys, access to world-class faculty, and our close-knit community.
