The Mounties: Josh Hicks

12 Oct 2019

Hicks_main2Football Mountie Josh Hicks graduated in 2019 with a Bachelor of Commerce and chose to return for a fifth year this year to play football and complete a second degree — a Bachelor of Arts majoring in economics. Originally from nearby Moncton, NB, he chose Mount Allison because he was familiar with much of the coaching staff from his Team NB experience and it was close to home, so he could continue playing in front of family and friends.

Hicks began playing football in Grade 6 in the Greater Moncton Football Association (GMFA), originally on the defensive line.

“The one time I played receiver, I dropped the ball,” he laughs.

He went on to play varsity football at Moncton High, winning a provincial championship in his senior year and being named MVP of the conference, plus two years of Team NB. In Grade 12, he committed to Mount Allison.

His offensive journey has come full circle as he is currently the active career leader among Mounties receivers — 109 receptions during his AUS career to date.

Hicks was recently named athlete of the week at Mount Allison for his performance vs. Bishop’s.

“I am grateful for it,” he says. “It means a lot to me.”

Hicks says what he enjoys most about the game is instantly having 100 brothers.

“It’s just like a family,” he says.

He says one of his most memorable sporting moments is his first touchdown in his first year with the Mounties vs. SMU.

“I was playing because Dakota Brush had a concussion and he was the first person to come over and congratulate me,” he says.

Last year Hicks was named USports NB Most Outstanding Offensive Player from Football NB and in 2019 was invited to the regional combine for the CFL.

After Mount Allison, he plans to complete his certification to become a chartered professional accountant (CPA).
