Mount Allison University welcomes journalist and activist Desmond Cole, Jan. 24

Author of The Skin We’re In focuses on accessibility, equity, inclusion, and diversity

SACKVILLE, NB — Mount Allison University will welcome journalist, author, and activist Desmond Cole as part of its 2022-23 President’s Speakers Series. Cole’s presentation, titled How much EDIA do we need?, will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. The hybrid event will include an in-person presentation (masks required) in Crabtree Auditorium, 49A York St., on the Mount Allison campus and will also be streamed via MS Teams. “We are pleased to welcome Desmond Cole to Mount Allison as part of the President’s Speakers Series,” says Dr. Jennifer Tomes, Mount Allison’s Dean of Science and Chair of the President’s Speakers Series. “His award-winning journalism and advocacy work, including the book The Skin We’re In, will help engage and continue important discussions around equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility on campus and in the wider community.”
 
Desmond Cole is a journalist, activist and author based in Toronto. His work focuses on the struggle against state violence, particularly local policing. Cole’s work includes live broadcast radio, podcasts, local reporting, a newspaper column, magazine features, and consultation on a documentary film. His best-selling book, The Skin We’re In, A Year of Black Resistance and Power, won the 2020 Toronto Book Award and the OLA Evergreen Award.
 
The Mount Allison event is presented with support of the Bronfman Lecture Fund.
