Mount Allison announces new Bachelor of Education

16-month degree to welcome first students in May 2028

SACKVILLE, NB, — Mount Allison University is reintroducing teacher education with a new Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree to help meet New Brunswick’s need for qualified teachers. Applications open in October 2027, with the first cohort beginning in May 2028.

The 16-month, four-term degree is for students with an undergraduate degree and offers elementary (Kindergarten–Grade 5) and secondary (Grades 6–12) streams. The anticipated first cohort is 70 to 90 students.

“Our Bachelor of Education builds on Mount Allison’s excellence to prepare teachers for today’s classrooms,” says President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Ian Sutherland. “It is an investment in future educators and the students and communities they will serve.”

The renewed post-baccalaureate degree combines small-cohort learning, close faculty mentorship, community partnerships, and extensive classroom experience.  The program has been designed with today’s classrooms in mind, with areas of study including inclusive education, literacy, Indigenous education, evidence-informed teaching, diverse learner needs, and teacher leadership.

Students will combine coursework and mentorship with three practicum experiences, including a 12-week extended teaching practicum, supported by a mentor teacher and faculty member.

Developed with input from Anglophone East School District (ASD-E), Indigenous education leaders, teachers, faculty, students, and community partners, the degree prepares graduates to pursue New Brunswick Teacher Certification 5, granted by the provincial authority.
