Hudson Biko is a third-year student from Nairobi, Kenya. He is in the philosophy, politics, and economics (PPE) program, minoring in environmental studies.

1. What is your summer internship and what do you hope to get out of it?

Over the summer I’ll be working as the recruitment and social media intern in the Registrar’s Office. Largely, my work revolves around content generation and strategy for our social media platforms, but I’m often involved in a range of tasks around the office and also give campus tours, so there’s a great variety to it.

Overall, I’m really looking forward to showcasing the diversity of the community that makes Mount A what it is to incoming and prospective students. To do that, I’m hoping to learn as much as I can from the people I work with and the experiences that I have, exploring the resources I have available to me, and getting really good at saying what I need to say in 280 characters or less.

2. What is the best thing about spending the summer in Sackville?

Being able to see more of it. As much as Sackville is a small town, there’s always more of it to explore, places you don’t see on the map, and parts you want to see again. Over the past month, I’ve come across an abandoned ice cream shop, a skate park, and found my way to a variety of dead ends. Often, in the school year, these are areas I wouldn’t have picked up on, or just passed by, so being able to take everything in has been really cool.

3. What are you involved in on campus?

Over the past year, I’ve been a part of the Mount Allison division of Enactus, operating in the student-run service ‘Textbook Osmosis,’ where we look to provide discounted books to students and donate educational materials to a variety of groups and non-profits that lead to a communal benefit from their use. I also had the chance to sit on the Mount Allison Students’ Union (MASU) student life committee and be a part of the mentorship program for international students.

4. What are you looking forward to during the rest of your time at Mount Allison?

I look forward to embracing more of the opportunities on campus, engaging with the great faculty we have here, and enjoying the occasional run through the Waterfowl Park or by the Swan Pond.

5. What is one piece of advice you would give to your first-year self?

The thing you can control the most is what’s in front of you. There are times I lingered on things I could have done differently in class or outside of it, but the reality is that, living in a time we are no longer in doesn’t change it. So, I would tell my first-year self to focus on what you can and start from where you are. The great thing about Mount A is that there is always a community to support you and opportunities to learn, so it helps if you can focus on those more often.
