Calendar of Events in Music

The Department of Music presents numerous performances each year, including featured recitals by faculty members and guest artists, students, and concerts by large and small ensembles. We also offer a series of free lectures by guest artists and faculty and our Wednesday afternoon Collegia, featuring performance by students in the Bachelor of Music program.

Featured Concerts and Recitals

Featured Concerts and Recitals include performances by faculty members and guest artists. Each year the department works to curate a season that provides variety of instruments, styles, and performances both classical and contemporary. Featured Concerts and Recitals are ticketed events:

Tickets and Subscriptions

Single Tickets - Adults $15   Seniors and non-MtA students $10   Family $30
Subscriptions - Adults $60   Seniors and non-MtA students $30   Family $90

All concerts are free for current Mount Allison students with valid ID card.

Proceeds from these ticket and subscription sales support Music Department student scholarships. Select concert ticket revenue goes to support future Music events, and maintenance of Brunton Auditorium. Tickets and subscriptions may be purchased through the Music Department and at the door. Cash Only.

Heralded as “a force of nature” (Toronto Star), Nikkei Canadian settler Teiya Kasahara 笠原貞野 (they/he) is a transgender opera singer and interdisciplinary theater creator based in Tkarón:to (colonially known as Toronto, Canada.)

Sunday, Nov 16, 3:00 pm.

 Jazz concert by faculty member Joel Miller (saxophone) and ensemble. Featuring songs from their new album "What if?" 

 

Monday, Nov 24, 8:00 pm.

Terra Ignota, Terra Ignita, presenting highlights from the 2025 NB Contemporary Music Festival and recent works from contemporary women composers exploring the human relationship to earth and ocean, network and screen. Featuring faculty member Nadia Francavilla (violin) and ensemble. 

 

Friday, Jan 16, 7:30 pm.

MtA Music faculty members Christina Haldane (soprano) and Adam Chicchillitti (guitar) present a concert featuring premiere performances of commissions by composers from Atlantic Canada including Jason Noble, Amy Brandon, & Jérôme Blais. 

 

Friday, Jan 23, 7:30 pm.

Performance of Rzewski’s “The People United Will Never Be Defeated!” (for speaking pianist) in celebration of its 50th anniversary, featuring UBC faculty member Corey Hamm (piano)

 

Friday, Jan 30, 7:30 pm.

"Flute, She Wrote": MtA Music faculty member Karin Aurell (flute) and collaborator James Coghlin (piano), present  a recital of works written for flute by female composers, featuring "Flute Sonata" by Mel Bonis, and works by many Canadian composers. 

 

Friday, Feb 6, 7:30 pm.

Games and Grooves: percussion duet, featuring Jocelyn Blanchette and MtA faculty member Joël Cormier (percussion), will explore the word "play" in every sense. Centered around Alejandro Vinaos's monumental piece "Book of Grooves, with lighter, more playful titles featuring various games between movements. 

 

 Friday, Mar 6, 7:30 pm.

A Recital of Women Composers: featuring MtA faculty member Olivier Blakney (horn) and James Coghlin (piano). As part of Women's History Month, this recital showcases women composers from a wide variety of nationalities such as Elizabeth Raum (Canada), Jane Vignery (Belgium), and more.

Student Recitals and Collegia

Collegium Musicum

Collegium is our mid-week, Wednesday afternoon recital, featuring performances by students in the Bachelor of Music program. All Collegia are free to attend, and all are welcome.

New Music @ Mount Allison

Twice a year, student composers team up with performers to bring their compositions to life. Composition concerts are free to attend, and all are welcome.

Entre Amis

One a year, students from the Bachelor of Music program at Mount Allison co-host a recital with Music students from the University of Moncton. Entre Amis is free to attend and all are welcome.

Credited Student Recitals

In the Spring, Bachelor of Arts students may perform a credited recital in lieu of a jury examination. These recitals are open to the public. Family, friends, community members, and students are encouraged to attend.

Ensemble Concerts

Symphonic Band

The Mount Allison Symphonic Band performs a wide variety of challenging works from the wonderful repertoire for full band, and also includes works from the long tradition of large chamber and serenade literature.  Donations are gladly accepted for ensemble concerts, with proceeds supporting student awards in Music.

Chamber Orchestra

Comprised of students from all departments of the university, as well as members of the local community, the chamber orchestra performs works both for full orchestra as well as for string orchestra.

Choral Ensembles

The Choral Society is a non-auditioned choir of mixed voices with a membership of approximately 50 members. The Elliott Chorale is an auditioned treble-voice chamber choir. Choral concerts often feature both ensembles, and may include guest performances/collaborations with other groups including the Children's Choir.

The Jazz Ensemble features students, faculty, staff, and community members, showcasing large arrangements from standards, to new arrangements.

Some events listed in this calendar are not presented by the Department of Music or are ticketed separately. Tickets for these events are sold separately by their sponsors.
