Mount Allison University Appoints George L. Cooper, KC (’89), as Chancellor

SACKVILLE, NB – Mount Allison University is pleased to announce the appointment of George L. Cooper, KC, as its 10th Chancellor. A proud Mount Allison alumnus and highly respected legal and community leader, Mr. Cooper will assume this titular role for a four-year term, effective January 1, 2026. 

“George Cooper exemplifies leadership rooted in service, integrity, and a deep connection to the Mount Allison community,” says Cheryl Hodder, KC (‘81), Chair of Mount Allison’s Board of Regents. “As a graduate, long-time supporter, and former Chair of our Board, he brings a thoughtful and values-driven approach that aligns beautifully with the spirit of this institution.” 

Mr. Cooper graduated from Mount Allison with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in 1989. He later earned his law degree from the University of New Brunswick followed by a Master of Laws from the University of Cambridge. He has built a distinguished legal career and currently serves as Chief Executive Officer and Partner at Cox & Palmer, one of Atlantic Canada’s leading law firms. 

“I am deeply honoured to be appointed Chancellor of Mount Allison University, a place that has played such a formative role in my life,” says Mr. Cooper. “Mount Allison’s tradition of academic excellence, close-knit community, and commitment to developing principled leaders is something I have always cherished. I look forward to working with students, alumni, faculty, and staff to help advance the University’s mission and celebrate its achievements in the years ahead.” 

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Mr. Cooper has contributed extensively to public and community service. He previously served as Chair of Mount Allison’s Board of Regents and Chair of the Greater Moncton International Airport Authority, among other governance and volunteer roles. A frequent lecturer and mentor, Mr. Cooper is known for his commitment to education, access to justice, and the development of emerging leaders. 

Mr. Cooper succeeds Lynn Loewen (‘82), who has served with distinction since 2018. The University extends its deepest gratitude for her dedication and longstanding service to the Mount Allison community.
