Mount Allison shines at 51st Annual Shine Day for Cystic Fybrosis
The 51st year of Shinerama, the national fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis Canada, has been a rousing success yet again at Mount Allison. Of 36 schools taking part across Canada, Mount Allison is consistently in the top fundraisers nationally — and this year was no exception.
Shine Chair and MASU executive team member Patrick Barnhill is proud of the results of both Shine Day and the ongoing fundraisers still taking place across campus.
“We are one of the smaller schools that takes part in this initiative in Canada and this year we had over 90 student volunteers across 19 partner sites in Greater Moncton,” Barnhill says. “All of our partners have been really easy to work with, and Shine Day was a huge success.”
Besides Shine Day, which took place on Sept. 6, MASU also hosted a community pickleball tournament in partnership with the Municipality of Tantramar; the annual local pub crawl with the support of Bagtown Brewery, Duckys, and Chirps; a garden party and silent auction at Hammond House; and a Trivia Night at Bagtown.
Barnhill is quick to appreciate the seamlessness of the events that took place within the community this year.
“Most larger schools do their Shinerama fundraising only on their own campuses because they are so much larger than we are. Here in Sackville, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do without the support of local businesses. Working with all of them has been easy, they’ve been so accommodating and it’s really a joint effort,” says Barnhill.
Over $10,000 has been raised so far, but Mount Allison students are not done yet. Until the end of 2025, each residence will hold their own fundraisers and they’re allowed to be as creative as they want for the cause. From pies-in-the-face to popcorn sales, residences are being imaginative and fun with their events. Their efforts also earn them house points, which add important value for the annual awards at the end of the school year.
