Community update

Earth Day — Wednesday, April 22

21 Apr 2026
From tree planting to reuse initiatives, activities across campus and the community this week

April 22 marks Earth Day, an opportunity to reflect on environmental responsibility in both small and collective ways across campus.

At Mount Allison University, tree planting continues as part of ongoing campus operations. This year, approximately 32 trees will be planted, including a row of evergreens near the new parking lot and pickleball court on Lansdowne, along with additional plantings across campus. Weather permitting, the Grounds team will plant a tree at Jennings Dining Hall on April 22 (Earth Day) to recognize the day. The University maintains a commitment to tree planting as part of ongoing campus renewal and landscape management.

With residence move-out also taking place on April 22, students are encouraged to consider reuse options for gently used items rather than leaving them at the curb. Students can drop off items at the Tantramar Veterans Memorial Civic Centre between 4–8 p.m. on April 22 for inclusion in the annual “Dump and Run” initiative.

The Dump and Run Yard Sale will take place on April 25 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 182 Main St. Gently used items will be available for purchase, with proceeds supporting the Sackville Food Bank. The initiative helps reduce waste, extend the life of usable goods, and support community needs.

Drivers are also reminded to avoid vehicle idling during residence move-out to help reduce emissions and support air quality during a busy campus day.

Earlier this year, the Environmental Issues Committee (EIC) was reinstated, bringing together faculty, staff, and student representatives. The committee is working to coordinate and support sustainability efforts across the University. Stay tuned for updates on their work in the months ahead.

Community members can also engage with local initiatives such as nominating a tree for Tantramar’s “Terrific Trees” program or connecting with local groups.
