Community update

Celebrating the second annual Community Kindness Day — Tuesday, Nov. 19

18 Nov 2024
Spreading kindness across campus and the community

Mount Allison University, in collaboration with the Mount Allison Students’ Union (MASU), and the Municipality of Tantramar, is excited to bring back Community Kindness Day on Tuesday, Nov. 19. Inspired by World Kindness Day on November 13, this event is scheduled after Fall Study Break for the entire campus and community to join together in acts of compassion and connection.

Students, faculty, staff, and the wider community are encouraged to get involved by participating in the planned activities outlined below that promote goodwill, connection, and a sense of belonging.

While the day encourages random acts of kindness, it is also about taking time to be kinder to yourself through self-care and mindfulness.

How will you spread kindness? Share your acts of kindness on Community Kindness Day on social media using #KindnessDayMtA and tagging @MountAllison, @MASUOfficial, and @tantramarnb.

Food and drinks for Community Kindness Day are generously provided by the Campbell-Verduyn Fund.

Community Kindness Day Events and Activities

A Cup of Kindness
10–11 a.m. | Chapel

Stop by the Chapel for a warm cup of tea or coffee and uplifting conversations. It’s the perfect way to start your day with a little kindness and connection.

Chain of Kindness Activity
10–11 a.m. | Manning Multi-Faith Room

Join us for the Chain of Kindness activity in the Manning Multi-Faith Room, located in the basement of the chapel. Students, faculty, and staff are welcome to write messages of appreciation and encouragement for their colleagues, which will be linked together to form a paper chain of kindness. This collaborative chain will be displayed as a symbol of our shared compassion and community spirit.

All are welcome—bring your kind words and help us make something meaningful together!

Residence Life – Kindness Cards
11:30–1:30 p.m. | Jennings

Join Residence Life for our Kindness Cards event! Stop by the Kindness Cards table set up at Jennings to pick up a card and share a moment of kindness with your friends or residence leaders. A great way to spread positivity and appreciation on Community Kindness Day!

Kindness Rocks!
2:30–3:30 p.m. | Chapel

Paint a kindness rock for yourself and some to share. Together, let’s brighten someone’s day by creating messages of kindness through art. This is a great chance to meet new people and spread positivity.

Waterfowl Park Clean-Up
3:30-4:30 p.m. | Meet at the entrance of the Student Centre

Join MASU for a community clean-up at the Waterfowl Park. Let’s help keep our trails litter-free. Garbage bags will be provided and after we’re done, come back to the Student Centre for a cup of hot chocolate to warm up and connect with others.

Notes of Kindness
All day | Jennings, Student Centre, and the Library

Visit Jennings Dining Hall, the Student Centre, or the Library and leave a note of gratitude or kindness on a sticky note on the whiteboards at the entrances. Share what you’re grateful for in our community or leave a thoughtful message for others. At the Student Centre, you can also enjoy a cup of hot chocolate and take a Community Kindness Day sticker!

Wave and say thank you to your community members at the crosswalks
All day – crosswalk on York St. and crosswalk on Main St.

Take a moment to wave and make eye contact with drivers who stop for you at crosswalks on York St. and Main St. Let’s celebrate our safe and friendly community by showing appreciation for those around us. Look for the “Thank You” signs at the crosswalk to remind you!

Hidden Notes of Kindness
All day | Library

Take a break from studying to find words of encouragement at the Library! The Library team will be hiding kindness notes on library cards throughout the building. These notes offer a gentle reminder to be kind to yourself and stay positive during exams. Keep an eye out as you browse the selves — you might just find a message that brings a smile to your day.
