Celebrating award-winning teaching at Mount Allison

19 Jun 2018

Hammond TeachingA historic teaching moment happened on campus at Hammond House recently when a group of award-winning faculty members gathered to celebrate teaching at Mount Allison. In attendance were recipients of three teaching honours from the past 35 years — Mount Allison’s Herbert and Leota Tucker Teaching Award, the Association of Atlantic Universities (AAU) Distinguished Teaching Award, and the 3M National Teaching Fellowship.

“Having all those teachers together in one room was really amazing,” says Purdy Crawford Professor of Teaching and Learning, Rosemary Polegato. “Everyone is so humble about their recognition and there is a sparkle in their eyes when they talk about teaching, learning, and students.”

Three faculty members spoke at the celebration, including Dean of Science and Graduate Studies Dr. Amanda Cockshutt, English professor Dr. Robert Lapp, and Dean of Arts Dr. Elizabeth Wells.

Wells talked about what good teaching is.

“Good teaching comes from good people — people with a passion for service, the ability to create positive change, and the desire to make the world a better place,” says Wells.

Polegato says this was an excellent way to celebrate the University’s teachers across all disciplines who have been recognized on campus, regionally, nationally, and internationally.

“Teaching should be recognized and celebrated at Mount Allison. It is one of our hallmarks.”

Attendees included Dr. Andrew Wilson (2018 Tucker), Dr. Amanda Cockshutt (2015 Tucker), Dr. Christl Verduyn (2014 Tucker, 2018 3M), Dr. Elizabeth Wells (2008 Tucker, 2008 AAU, 2010 3M), Dr. Louise Wasylkiw (2007 Tucker), Dr. Nancy Vogan (2005 Tucker), Dr. Robert Lapp (2003 Tucker, 2003 AAU, 2008 3M), Dr. Vincent Reinsborough (1998 Tucker), Dr. Roland Crooks (1994 Tucker), Dr. L.R.C Barclay (1993 Tucker), Dr. Art Miller (1992 Tucker), Prof. Alex Fancy (1984 Tucker, 1991 AAU, 1988 3M), Dr. Rosemary Polegato (2011 AAU, 2014 3M), Dr. Jeff Ollerhead, Eileen Herteis, Dr. Nauman Farooqi, Dr. Sandy MacIver, and Dr. Robert Campbell.
