1 — PREAMBLE

The University regulates the presence of animals in University buildings and on campus grounds in order to maintain a safe and healthy environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

2 — POLICY

a. Animals are not permitted in University buildings and residences, with the exception of private apartments within the residences and service animals or emotional support animals (ESAs).

b. Service animals and/or ESAs are trained animals that provide services or are part of treatment plan for a person with a disability.

c. Unless readily apparent, documentation supporting a person having a service animal/ESA must be made available to the University. As such, service animals or ESAs should be registered with either the Meighen Centre for a student or with the department of People and Culture for an employee. The appropriate department will provide procedural information on registration upon request.

d. Service Animals/ESAs may not be permitted in certain areas of the University or without a proper plan or equipment (e.g. labs, food preparation areas). Registering a service animal with the Meighen Centre of People or Culture will allow for proper health and safety regulations to be followed.

e. All animals on University property must be on a leash and restrained from running loose on campus.

f. Individuals are responsible for clean-up of property from animal droppings and any damages that animal may cause.

g. All animals must always be under the control of their handler. If an animal poses a risk, the handler and animal may be asked to leave the University property.

h. Violations of this policy should be reported to the building manager or to Facilities Management. Students may report violations to the Director of Student Experience.

i. The Director, Facilities Management reserves the right to contact the Meighen Centre and/or People and Culture for clarification.
