Marking significant milestone

Celebrating Grace Annie Lockhart and shaping the future
By: Carolle de Ste-Croix ('90), Editor of the Record, Director of Alumni Engagement

As we look forward to 2025, Mount Allison University is poised to mark a significant milestone in its history and in the annals of higher education. It will be the 150th anniversary of a groundbreaking achievement by Grace Annie Lockhart (1875), the first woman in the British Empire to earn a bachelor's degree. This event is not merely a historical footnote; it represents a foundational moment in the ongoing journey toward gender equality in education — a journey that Mount Allison has proudly led.

In anticipation of this sesquicentennial celebration, Interim President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Robert MacKinnon (‘78) has established the Grace Annie Lockhart Sesquicentennial Celebrations Ad-hoc Committee (GAL 2025). Chaired by University Archivist David Mawhinney and myself, the committee reflects our diverse community, with members drawn from our students, faculty, alumni, and staff. Their task is significant yet inspiring — to coordinate a series of activities and events throughout 2025 that not only honour Lockhart’s legacy but also encourage ongoing dialogue about the role of women in public life.

This celebration reaffirms Mount Allison’s commitment to being at the forefront of advocating for gender equality. It also provides us an opportunity to showcase the contributions of our University to a global audience, enhancing our reputation and attracting new generations of students who are eager to learn in an environment that values and promotes equality.

The planned activities — ranging from a special convocation and lecture series to exhibitions and an educational conference — aim to engage not just our University community, but the wider public in understanding and appreciating the impact of women like Lockhart. We believe that these events will serve as a beacon, drawing attention to the pivotal roles that women have played and continue to play in shaping our society.

Our communications strategy for GAL 2025 includes regular updates in our publications, social media campaigns, and interactions with local and national media. We are dedicated to ensuring that the celebrations reach as many people as possible, spreading the inspiring message of Lockhart’s life and achievements.

This letter in the Record is just the beginning. We will continue to bring you updates and stories related to GAL 2025, culminating in a special edition of the Fall 2025 Record. We invite all of you to participate in these celebrations, whether by attending events, contributing ideas, or simply sharing Lockhart’s story within your networks. Together, we can honour her legacy and impact on our community and beyond.

Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm. It is your engagement that will make the Grace Annie Lockhart Sesquicentennial Celebrations a cornerstone event for Mount Allison, reinforcing our role as a leader in education and equality.

Here’s to celebrating our past and inspiring our future!
