A game changer for Mount Allison

New Multi-Sport Complex will provide year-round facilities for sports, recreation activities, and community events
By: Paul Henry ('85), Vice Chair, Mount Allison Board of Regents

The Multi-Sport Complex is designed to bring people together in meaningful ways. Whether you’re a dedicated athlete or simply seeking connection, the complex will offer something for everyone, strengthening community bonds and fostering a sense of belonging that will go beyond the university's sports programs.

Looking back on my days on campus, I feel a deep connection to both Mount Allison and its sports culture. I was fortunate enough to be part of the 84’ Vanier Cup football team and since then, my wife Jennie Ferguson (’85) and I have had the pleasure to watch three of our children, Elenor (’16), Madeleine (’19) and Julia (’24), compete in varsity soccer, swimming, and volleyball further deepening our connection.

The Multi-Sport Complex will provide year-round facilities for a variety of sports, recreation activities, and community events that will support students and the Tantramar region. Featuring a multi-use playing venue for sports like basketball, volleyball, soccer and ultimate frisbee. It will include gender-inclusive washrooms, flexible spaces, and meet Green Globes sustainability standards. What makes this project special is not limited to varsity athletes, but it significantly expands our year-round access to sports and recreation for the entire community.

This expansive space will allow students and the broader community to gather, engage in a wide variety of sports, expand practice times, or participate in intramural sports. We will eliminate today’s limitations for participation by more than doubling our physical footprint.

The Multi-Sport Complex is a significant investment that will provide a top-notch venue for creating new memories at Mount Allison. I am excited about this project. Initially serving as the Interim Library, it presents a unique opportunity to address two needs in one solution: offering a much-needed temporary library space while establishing a long-term facility that will enhance the health and wellness of students, staff, and the broader community.

From the moment it opens its doors, this facility will leave a legacy, and I am proud to be a part of it.
