What Is It? #13
True or False?
This is an SEM image of the diatom Actinoptychus senarius, a microscopic
marine algae. The resemblance to the universal symbol for radiation (inset)
is not a coincidence. Following atomic testing in the Pacific, scientists
discovered this diatom in water samples taken near the explosions, and for
a time thought it was some form of fallout. Before the confusion was
straightened out, it became associated with radioactive testing, and its
shape was stylized into the "trefoil" design that serves as the warning
symbol for radiation throughout the world.
