The SEM is inherently parfocal - the image stays in focus with changes in magnification. This animation shows a valve of the diatom Pseudo-nitzschia seriata cycled through magnifications ranging from x1,200 to x12,000. Once focused at a higher magnification, the image will remain in focus at any lower magnification.
